Approach

Our mission is to help our audiences feel their lives.

Performance, Art, and Science

Born out of the collision of cultural influences found only in the San Francisco Bay Area, Capacitor aims to be the embodiment of smart design, creative science, discreet technology, wild nature, and honest expression. We aspire to unprecedented excellence rooted in inquiry, collaboration, and the integration of body and mind.

Collaborative Process

In the spirit of scientific inquiry, Capacitor uses a laboratory-style creative process, called Capacitor Lab. For each new work, we assemble a cross-disciplinary team of the world's leading artists and scientists to explore a specific concept, find common threads, and create a shared vocabulary. From this collaboration, a performance is born. This process is at the core of who we are as a company, taking us and our audiences to unexpected, original places.

Of course, Capacitor isn’t for everyone. Pretentious dance connoisseurs who eschew companies like Cirque de Soleil and Blue Man Group on the grounds that they aim to please might find the flaming helmets and cosmonaut courtships of Within Outer Spaces a tad too dazzling to qualify as high art. Fire and sex always smack of spectacle. To them, Capacitor replies with even more spectacle, fire, and sex. In an age when every sophisticate is trying his hardest to glean bits of meaning from artists who aspire to make a mockery of truth, beauty, and love, in an age of Andy Warhol fanatics and Don Delillo imitators, over-the-top exhibitionism has rightly become a vehicle for such a movement. Framing this exhibitionism within the post-postmodern confines of a relevant question should be the aim of any performing arts company working today. By fusing into coherence incoherent spectacle and sensible science, Capacitor has warped light-years ahead of the game. ‘Within Outer Spaces’ should be praised to the stars.
